The following technologyreview.com article by Karen Hao lists 10 ways AI can help save our planet and our own existence. She’s referencing the report prepared by some of the biggest names in AI research which covers possible machine-learning interventions in 13 domains, from electricity systems to farms and forests to climate prediction. Within each domain, it breaks out the contributions for various subdisciplines within machine learning, including computer vision, natural-language processing, and reinforcement learning.

Here’s a list of 10 of the “high leverage” recommendations from the report.  Read the article for full description of each with references.

  • Improve predictions of how much electricity we need
  • Discover new materials
  • Optimize how freight is routed
  • Lower barriers to electric-vehicle adoption
  • Help make buildings more efficient
  • Create better estimates of how much energy we are consuming
  • Optimize supply chains
  • Make precision agriculture possible at scale
  • Improve deforestation tracking
  • Nudge consumers to change how we shop
